Textbook: Introduction to Linear Algebra, Johnson, Riess & Arnold, (5th Edition).

Description: (By S. Tanveer) Beyond the first two chapters, which are mostly computational, this course turns distinctly abstract--very different from the experience you are likely to have had in calculus. You are expected to do the necessary work in order to understand and apply these abstract concepts, including proofs. I suspect most of you are unlikely to appreciate its value immediately. I suspect many of you might struggle with proofs initially until you put time and effort to get the hang of it. Linear algebra is widely applicable to many areas of sciences, engineering, as well as quantitative social sciences and business studies. There are many instances where useful algorithms in practical applications involved deep understanding of abstract concepts. The material in this course may be considered basic bread and butter material in introductory linear algebra.

Grading: Weekly Homework (35%) + Midterm 1 (15%) + Midterm 2 (15%) + Final exam (35%).

Midterm 1: February 17 (Friday), in class. The exam covers everything in Chapter 1 that we discussed. A sample exam.

Midterm 2: March 29 (Wednesday), in class. The exam covers the range specified in the standard syllabus, more precisely: Sections 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4. A sample exam.

Final Exam: April 26 (Wednesday), 6:00-7:45pm in CB0130. The exam covers everything discussed, including homework assignments and past exams. Note this is a specially scheduled final exam, common with Sections 0020 and 0085.

A sample final exam.
