LIU ZHIPING

One day in 1994 (a pre Netscape time when the most popular browser was called Xmosaic), Liu Zhiping (physics 80) somehow got an idea to build a home page for BNU overseas alumni. He happened to have a list of people studying in the US. So he wrote the home page in HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) and sent the news to people on his list. One of the persons on his list was Jiang Xun (math 78), who was a postdoc at University of California at Davis. Jiang Xun and Ban Chunsheng (math 77), who was a faculty at Ohio State University, actually were working on to build a www homepage for people from BNU mathematics department. Jiang Xun contacted Liu Zhiping and suggested to link the two pages. Since then, Liu Zhiping managed the files of non math folks, which were located at a computer in Cornell University where Liu Zhiping was a postdoc, while Jiang Xun managed the files for the math people. During the development stage, with the help of Ban Chunsheng and Jiang Xun's expertise in HTML, we had a beautiful cover page with automatic register. When Liu Zhiping left Cornell physics department in 1995, Ban Chunsheng took over all the responsibilities. He did a great favor for our BNU alumni and spent lot of his time since in building and managing this homepage. Using this space, Ban Chunsheng, Jiang Xun and Liu Zhiping hope our BNU fellows like this page, broadcast the news and encourage other alumni you know to register. Together, we help our school and also help connecting ourselves.

Comments from Jiang Xun

I read through the history page and like to make one comment: It was Dr. Chen Lufan, Physics graduate, and now a computer expert, who started a mailing list for the BNU alumni. I think that was the first attempt.
