Required readings: Reinhard Laubenbacher and David Pengelley, Mathematical Expeditions: Chronicles by the Explorers, Springer, 1998, and Nasar, Sylvia, A Beautiful Mind, Simon and Schuster, 1998.

Calendar of Assignments:

Monday, July 1: Assignment 1 due. You will do this assignment on your own. No late papers will be accepted. See the website for the assignment. Also, come today prepared to signup for an appointment with the instructor in the week of July 1 to finalize your paper topic.

Friday, July 5: Deadline for choosing topic of term paper in consultation with the instructor. A list of possible topics is on the website. You may suggest others. One person to a given topic.

Wednesday, July 10: Submit abstract of term paper, with bibliography of sources and references. These will be returned with comments on Friday, July 12.

Monday, July 29: Complete first draft of term paper due. These will be returned with comments by Wednesday, July 31.

August 5 through August 15: Each student will do a 20-minute oral presentation based on his or her term paper topic. More time will be scheduled if necessary.

Monday, August 12: Final copy of term paper due.

Friday, August 16, 8:30-10:18am: Final Exam. The exam will have some general essay questions and some short answer questions.
