Textbook:  Calculus for Scientists and Engineers: Early Transcendentals, OSU custom edition, by Briggs, Cochran, and Gillet (Pearson).

Course description: Topics include integration (techniques and applications), sequences and series, Taylor series, parametric equations, polar coordinates, vectors, lines and curves in space. We will cover Sections 6.2-6.9, 7.1-7.5, 7.8, 8.1-8.3, 9.1-9.6, 10.1-10.4, 11.1-11.3, and 12.1-12.5. You are expected to attend the lectures, and read the appropriate sections of the text, each week.

Homework Assignments:   Homework consists of online homework (graded) and additional offline assignments from the course textbook. This course uses the the Carmen course management system in conjunction with the MyMathLab online homework system. You will receive an access code for MyMathLab when you purchase your textbook. Alternatively, you can buy MyMathLab accesss only, which includes an electronic version of the textbook. MyMathLab access is provided as a link through Carmen (, and not through the general MyMathLab website. At the end of the semester your lowest MyMathLab score will be dropped. It is strongly recommended that you do your homework regularly - otherwise you will be at a serious disadvantage in quizzes and exams. You are encouraged to ask any questions about homework problems during my office hours.

MyMathLab Technical Help:

Study Plan: Additional practice problems are available for you through the MyMathLab Study Plan. These questions are not for credit, but will help you study. The Study Plan can automatically select problems for you to practice based on how you do on your homework assignments and sample tests available in MyMathLab. The sample tests are available for you to use, but are NOT intended to be practice exams or exam reviews for the course midterms or final.

The Math Lab: I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the Math Lab in the Conard Learning Center.

Quizzes:  A short quiz will be given at the beginning of some of the lectures (quizzes will generally consist of two problems and be ten minutes in length). There will be seven quizzes in total. Their tentative dates are 8/28, 9/04, 9/25, 10/02, 10/23, 10/30, and 11/20. Each quiz will consist of problems selected from the most recent homework assignments. At the end of the semester your lowest quiz score will be dropped. 

Midterm exams:   There will be three midterm exams. Their tentative dates are Wednesday September 11th, Wednesday October 9th, and Wednesday November 6th. Each midterm exam will take the place of one lecture.  Absence from an exam (midterm or final) will be excused if you can provide verifiable and convincing evidence that you have a significant illness or serious family crisis that will prevent you from attending. In such a case, you are expected to make arrangements promptly with me to make up the exam.

Final Exam:   The final exam will be comprehensive, and will take place from 6:00 PM to 7:45 PM on Thursday, December 5th.

Calculators:   Calculators are not required in this course. Calculators are permitted during quizzes and exams, except those calculators that have symbolic algebra or calculus capabilities, or that have a QWERTY keyboard. In particular, the following calculators (and their upgrades) are not permitted:  TI-86, TI-89, TI-92, TI Voyage 200, HP-40, HP-48, HP-49, Casio FX2.0, Casio CFX 9970G. Also, it is not permitted to use higher memory functions on a calculator to store and read formulas during a quiz or an exam; this is the electronic equivalent of using notes during exams, which is prohibited. Cellphones and web-enabled devices cannot be used as calculators during quizzes or exams.

GEC statement: This Mathematics course can be used, depending on your degree program, to satisfy the Quantitative and Logical Skills category of the General Education Requirement (GEC). The goals and learning objectives for this category are:
    Goals: To master the essentials of Differential and Integral Calculus and its applications, and to develop the computational and problem solving skills for that purpose.
   Learning objectives: To understand some basic techniques of Calculus, including the notions of sequences and series, power series, parametric equations, polar coordinates, vectors, lines and curves in space. Problem solving will be emphasized throughout the course to promote a deeper understanding of the theory of calculus and its applications.
