Monday, April 19, 2010, 7:00-8:30pm, Rm 410 ILB Title: Pell’s equation Abstract: The simplest Pell's equation has the form x^2-2y^2=1. The problem is to find its integer solutions. It is easy to check that the pairs (3,2), (17,12), (99,70), and (577,408) are the solutions. In fact it has infinitely many solutions. I will explain a method how to find all the solutions and show its relations to continued fractions and to the Chebyshev polynomials.
