Undergraduate Activities

RTG funds will partially support several research activities and learning opportunities for undergraduate students, detailed below. Additional funds for the Knots and Graphs program are provided by the College of Arts and Sciences at the Ohio State University.

Knots and Graphs REU:

Since 2005, S. Chmutov has run the tremendously successful undergraduate research working group on "Knots and Graphs". Yearly, this program recruits 10-12 OSU undergraduates (at all stages), divided into groups of three to work on each project. For 8 weeks, the group meets twice per week to discuss background material, initially presented by the instructor (Chmutov) but transitioning to student presentations by week 3. The instructor meets separately with each small group at least once a week.

ROMUS program:

The ROMUS (Research Opportunities in Mathematics for Underrepresented Students) program has been running at OSU since 2019. Its central goal is to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing doctoral work (for instance at OSU) in mathematics. ROMUS recruits nationally through MathPrograms.org.

Each Summer, students work with a faculty member on a project of mutual interest for 8-10 weeks during the summer. In addition to the research projects, all accepted students will participate in various cohort activities. The program supports travel, housing accommodations, and a stipend of $5000 for all participating students.

To apply, please submit a transcript, a CV/resume, a personal statement, and a letter of recommendation through this website. Applications are due January 15 2024 and decisions will be made in late January and early February, 2024. All applications will be submitted through mathprograms.org at this link.

For further questions, please contact the organizers via email.

Directed Reading program:

The Directed Reading Program (DRP) at OSU started in 2019 as a way to enrich the experience of undergraduates and graduate students by learning mathematics in an informal setting. Each semester, around 25 teams of an undergraduate student and a graduate student study a topic of their choice in consultation with a mentor, leading to a presentation in a seminar at the end of the semester.

For upcoming activities, application details and an archive of previous installments see this website.
