This is a second-semester course in algebraic geometry; our focus is an introduction to the theory of schemes.
Classes are on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 11:30 - 12:25pm, in MW 154.
We will use Algebraic Geometry, by Robin Hartshorne. As always, it's a good idea to consult other sources as needed. Especially recommended:
The Rising Sea: Foundations of Algebraic Geometry book by Ravi Vakil
FAC by J. P. Serre, Chapitre I, especially sections 1 and 2 (for basics on sheaf theory)
EGA I (the indispensable, original source, and in my opinion has the clearest proofs, though there's little by way of examples or motivation)
Grades will be based on several homework assignments.
HW1: PDF, due 1/23.
HW2: PDF, due 2/6.
